Live your dream

I became interested in art at a very young age. I was born in the remote village of Jang Aghli in Northern Afghanistan and discovered my passion for drawing in primary school. Even though there were hardly any opportunities to study art in my country, I did not let myself get discouraged and kept working hard towards my dream. My family and friends also supported me along the way. In the end, I received a bursary from Dokuz Eylul University in Turkey in 1995 to study fine arts. My skills developed stroke by stroke, and I completed my studies successfully and exhibited my work in solo and group shows. I now earn my living from my work and teach art in the city of Antalya.

My heart is at home in Afghanistan, of course. But here in Turkey, I have the chance to go my own way. I am very thankful to my family for having believed in me and having done everything humanly possible to help me fulfil my dream. I miss them very much. But my own family gives me strength: my wife Serap, whom I married in 2005, and my daughter Masal, who was born in 2012. I hope she experiences the same thing I did: that nothing is impossible – you only need people who believe in you.
